What to Expect from Therapy
What is therapy like?

Although therapist’s styles can vary, there are a few things that are standard in a therapy session. Your therapist will invite you to discuss problems or challenges you are currently facing, as well as any goals you are working towards. Your therapist will encourage you to think deeply about how to problem solve and access strengths you already possess. Some therapists may take notes during the session, while others will take notes after the session. It is not uncommon for a therapist to provide ‘homework,’ to help you reach your goals during the week. The homework may be to call a friend afterwork, go for a walk or write a few words in a gratitude journal- it all depends on your goals. The beauty of therapy is that it is unique to each individual. For some it can be short-term work, focusing on specific issues or events while others may wish to work on long-term goals, such as processing and working through past trauma. Above all, therapy should be a warm, empathetic space where you feel comfortable being your true self.

What happens during the First Session?

The first session is your time to tell your story to your therapist. You may be prompted with specific questions about your background and current life, however, this is your time to let your therapist know who you are. Another important aspect is deciding if your therapist is a good fit for you- it’s okay if they are not! Do you see yourself being vulnerable with this therapist? Do you think you can trust and open up? It is important that you feel confident and comfortable working with your therapist- a strong therapeutic relationship is key! Lastly, during this session, you will begin creating goals that your therapist will support you in accomplishing!

How will therapy help me?

Engaging in therapy offers many positive outcomes. A therapist can offer support with problem-solving techniques, and improved coping skills for challenges such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues and stress management. Many discover that therapy can be very helpful with personal growth, as well as relationships with family and friends. Therapists can offer a new view on challenging issues and guide you toward positive change. The impact of therapy depends on your active involvement in the process and the application of what you learn.

Do you accept insurance?

You should first check with your insurance carrier to understand your benefits and if therapy is covered under your plan. You can ask questions like: -What are my mental health benefits? -Is there a copayment or out-of-pocket costs? -How many therapy sessions does my plan cover? -Does my plan pay for out-of-network therapists? I am considered an Out of Network Provider and do not currently work with insurance panels. I am able to provide a 'superbill,' upon client request.
